Luxury, History and Hospitality in Eastern Sicily

Some travel days are memorable, other days feel almost impossible to believe while you're living them.

Waking up at Four Seasons San Domenico Palace in Taormina was one of those moments.

For years, I had admired this extraordinary hotel from afar, following its story and stunning imagery online, never imagining I would one day be a guest. Perched dramatically above the Ionian Sea within a beautifully restored 14th-century convent, it is one of the most spectacular hotels I have ever experienced.

For someone who has always had a deep appreciation for beautiful hotels, this felt like a true bucket-list moment.

It Felt Like a Dream

Few hotels possess the sense of place found at Four Seasons Taormina.

Historic cloisters, manicured gardens, sweeping terraces, and panoramic views create an atmosphere that is both grand and remarkably peaceful. The property's rich history is visible throughout, yet every detail feels contemporary, refined, and effortlessly luxurious.

What stood out just as much as the setting was the hospitality.

A special thank you to Davide, Andrea, and Francesca, whose warmth and generosity made the experience even more memorable. Their genuine passion for hospitality perfectly reflects the standard of service that has made Four Seasons one of the world's most respected luxury brands.

Breakfast overlooking the coastline provided the perfect start to the day, with views that are every bit as breathtaking as you would imagine.

Coastal Elegance at Belmond Villa Sant'Andrea

From the heights of Taormina, we made our way down to the waterfront to visit Belmond Villa Sant'Andrea.

While Four Seasons offers dramatic clifftop grandeur, Villa Sant'Andrea embraces a more relaxed seaside atmosphere. Positioned directly on the Bay of Mazzarò, the property combines classic Italian elegance with a distinctly coastal feel.

One of the first details that catches your eye is a beautifully styled Christian Dior Vespa near the entrance, a small but memorable touch that perfectly captures the property's sophisticated charm.

The views across the sparkling Ionian Sea are exceptional, creating an atmosphere that encourages guests to slow down and simply enjoy their surroundings.

Discovering Minareto

Our journey continued south towards Syracuse, with a stop at Minareto, one of the region's most striking coastal resorts.

Overlooking Ortigia from across the water, the property feels completely different from Taormina. The landscape is dotted with cacti, succulents, and Mediterranean vegetation, creating a setting that feels both natural and contemporary.

Its collection of suites and villas offers a modern interpretation of Sicilian luxury, blending sophisticated design with stunning coastal views. The result is a resort that feels private, stylish, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

Exploring the Beauty of Ortigia

Arriving in Ortigia, we checked into Grand Hotel Des Étrangers, a distinguished member of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World collection.

From there, we explored the historic island itself.

Ortigia is one of those destinations that immediately captures your heart. Narrow laneways open into elegant piazzas, historic buildings tell centuries-old stories, and every corner seems to reveal another beautiful view.

The main square may well be one of the most beautiful I have encountered anywhere in the world.

Our guide, Elisa, shared the city's history with incredible passion and knowledge. Having spent more than two decades introducing visitors to Ortigia, her stories and insights brought the destination to life in a way that guidebooks simply cannot.

An Evening to Remember

The day concluded with one of the highlights of the entire journey.

Joined by Serena and Francesca from Minareto, we participated in a hands-on Sicilian cooking class that celebrated the region's rich culinary traditions.

Filled with laughter, local flavours, wonderful company, and plenty of delicious food, it was the perfect way to end an extraordinary day.

Experiences like these remind us that while exceptional hotels create unforgettable settings, it is often the people, culture, and connections that become the most treasured travel memories.

A Special Thank You

A heartfelt thank you to the team at Essence of Sicily, particularly Pepe and the wonderful local guides who made this experience so special.

Their ability to combine authentic local experiences with exceptional hospitality created a journey that felt deeply personal, beautifully curated, and uniquely Sicilian.

Final Thoughts

Eastern Sicily offers an extraordinary blend of luxury, history, culture, and natural beauty.

From the iconic Four Seasons San Domenico Palace and the coastal elegance of Belmond Villa Sant'Andrea to the contemporary sophistication of Minareto and the timeless charm of Ortigia, every stop revealed a different side of this remarkable region.

For travellers seeking an authentic luxury experience in Italy, Sicily delivers something truly unforgettable.
